On December 27, 2022, Visionary Women for Development (VWD) held a dynamic training session aimed at mobilizing youth and raising awareness about two critical issues affecting our society: gender-based violence (GBV) in households and sexual reproductive health (SRH).
The session, facilitated by an experienced professional, was a step forward in equipping young people with the knowledge and tools needed to protect themselves and make informed decisions for a better future.
Shining a Light on Gender-Based Violence (GBV)
The facilitator emphasized that GBV is not a one-sided issue—it affects both girls and boys. However, girls remain at a greater risk and bear the brunt of violence. Tragically, many girls are left to carry the burden of premature pregnancies alone, as boys often shy away from their responsibilities. This stark reality calls for a collective effort to foster accountability, respect, and equality among youth.
Introducing Sexual Reproductive Health (SRH)
The training session took an eye-opening turn as participants were asked about their understanding of sexual and reproductive health. Many admitted that SRH was a new concept to them. This candid acknowledgment underscored the importance of open discussions and access to genuine information.
The facilitator provided clear, fact-based guidance on SRH, highlighting the potential consequences of unprotected sexual activities, including:
- The risk of unintended pregnancies.
- The transmission of sexually transmitted infections (STIs).
Participants were urged to prioritize abstinence as the safest and most effective measure. However, the facilitator also stressed the importance of using condoms as a fallback option to prevent both pregnancies and infections when abstinence is not practiced.
Empowering Youth Through Knowledge
The training session left a profound impact on the participants, equipping them with:
- Awareness: Understanding their rights and the risks associated with GBV and unsafe sexual practices.
- Responsibility: Recognizing the importance of making informed decisions and taking accountability for their actions.
- Support Networks: Knowing where to turn for help or guidance when facing challenges related to GBV or SRH.
Looking Ahead
This session was not just a one-time event; it was part of a larger movement by VWD to create a well-informed and empowered youth population in Rwanda. By fostering awareness and initiating conversations on sensitive yet crucial topics, VWD is paving the way for a safer, healthier, and more equitable society.
